55,000

Pounds Is the Starting Point.

The filing threshold uses taxable gross weight. Check the vehicle and registration facts—not just what today’s load weighs.

July → June

A Different Tax Calendar.

The 2290 tax period runs July 1 through June 30. Your filing deadline generally follows the month of first use.

Schedule 1

Keep the Proof.

The stamped schedule is generally used for registration. Keep the accepted return and payment records together.

Have A Deadline Coming Up?

Start the consultation and state the deadline in your initial concern. Have your EIN, legal business name, VINs, taxable gross weights, first-use months, and prior Schedule 1 ready. Share sensitive records only through the firm’s secure intake.

A low-cost filing service may be all you need for one form. A serious tax relationship asks what is happening between the settlement statement and your family’s bank account.

Straight Answers / Form 2290 FAQ

Before You Hit Submit.

Who Needs To File Form 2290?

Generally, the person in whose name a highway vehicle is registered must file when its taxable gross weight is 55,000 pounds or more and it is used on public highways during the tax period. Special exemptions and ownership situations can change the answer.

When Is Form 2290 Due?

Generally, file by the last day of the month after the vehicle’s first use on a public highway during the July–June tax period. July first use generally means an August deadline. Weekend and legal-holiday rules can move the due date. Do not assume every truck has the same deadline.

What If My Truck Runs 5,000 Miles Or Less?

You can generally claim suspension of the tax if you expect use of 5,000 miles or less during the tax period, or 7,500 miles or less for a qualifying agricultural vehicle. Suspension still requires a return. Exceeding the limit can trigger additional filing and tax.

What Is A Stamped Schedule 1?

Schedule 1 lists the vehicles reported with Form 2290. The IRS-stamped copy is generally used as proof for state registration; a suspended vehicle may also appear on it. Special registration exceptions apply. A submitted return is not the same as IRS acceptance.

Can THE TAX CUTTERY E-File My Form 2290?

Yes. The firm has Form 2290 e-filing capability. Begin the free tax consultation and tell us your filing deadline. We confirm the scope, fee, records, and authorization before filing. Buying the Guide or starting a consultation does not file a return.

Is Form 2290 Filing Free With The Book?

No free filing offer is included. The Guide, any Form 2290 engagement, bookkeeping, tax returns, and advisory work are separately scoped. Any tax due to the IRS is separate from professional fees. You see the proposed scope and fee before agreeing.

Why Use A Tax Firm Instead Of A Filing Website?

A filing website may suit a straightforward return. Choose a firm when you also want to connect the filing with your books, business structure, income taxes, and household goals. Compare the scope of help you need—not just the price of sending one form.

Does Form 2290 Cover My Other Trucking Taxes?

No. Heavy highway vehicle use tax is a separate federal excise tax. Filing it does not complete your income tax return, fuel-tax reporting, payroll obligations, or state registrations. We identify the work you need and agree on its scope.

Do I Need The Guide Before Starting?

You can start the free consultation as a guest. Verified Guide ownership is required for the new-client tax advisory path; existing clients retain their established access. Tell us about an approaching Form 2290 deadline immediately so the firm can assess the filing request.

Can We Review My Business Every Quarter?

Yes—ask about a quarterly planning rhythm through Tax Advisory. Start with the consultation and file setup. Any live appointment reserves only a 60-minute conversation reviewing collected information and results. Research, return preparation, and written work are separate engagements.
